Assistance with statistical analysis

TruePositive provides statistical consultancy on a defined question: the design of a study, the analysis of data already collected, or the review of an analysis carried out by others. The work is done by Klaus Kaae Andersen, PhD in statistics, formerly head of the unit for Statistics and Pharmacoepidemiology at the Danish Cancer Society Research Center and associate professor at the Technical University of Denmark, with 164 peer-reviewed publications.

Engagements range from a few hours of advice on a single analysis to complete register-based studies. Each is quoted as a fixed fee against a written scope, and each is delivered by the same person who scoped it.

How an engagement proceeds

  1. Enquiry

    A short message stating the question, the data available and the timescale, by the contact form or to contact@truepositive.dk.

  2. Discussion

    Thirty minutes, without charge, to establish whether the question can be answered with the data that exist and what the analysis would involve.

  3. Written proposal

    Scope, deliverables, timeline and fixed fee on one or two pages. A mutual non-disclosure agreement can be signed before any detail is discussed.

  4. Analysis and reporting

    Analysis in R with documented, reproducible code; tables and figures; a methods and results text ready for a manuscript, protocol or report.

Data, software and confidentiality

Analyses are carried out in R and delivered with the code, organised so that results can be re-run from the source data by someone else. Work can be conducted inside secure research environments, including those of Statistics Denmark and the Danish Health Data Authority, where data cannot leave the platform. Personal or patient-level data are not to be sent by email or through the contact form; a transfer method is agreed once an NDA is in place.

Based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Meetings in person in the Copenhagen area or online. Working languages are English and Danish; analyses and reports are written in either.

Questions

Can a statistician be engaged for a single analysis?

Yes. A defined analysis, a review of an existing analysis, or a sample size calculation is typically an advisory engagement of two to five days, quoted as a fixed fee after a short scoping conversation. Larger studies are scoped separately.

Is statistical help available for a PhD project?

Yes. The usual forms are a review of the analysis plan before data are examined, the analysis for one or more papers, and assistance with statistical reviewer comments. The consultant has supervised nine doctoral and sixteen master's students.

What does statistical consultancy cost?

Work is quoted as a fixed fee against a written scope, after a thirty-minute discussion without charge. Rates are provided on request. Very small questions can sometimes be settled in that first conversation.

Which software is used?

Analyses are carried out in R and delivered with documented code so that results can be reproduced from the source data. Existing code in SAS, Stata or SPSS can be reviewed, and data in any common format can be read.

Can the analysis be carried out with Danish register data?

Yes. Most of the consultant's own research uses the Danish national registers, and analysis can be conducted inside the secure research environments of Statistics Denmark and the Danish Health Data Authority, where data cannot be exported. Access requires approvals that are built into the timeline from the outset.

Is work undertaken outside Copenhagen?

Yes. Most work is conducted remotely, and clients are located across Denmark, the other Nordic countries and Europe. Meetings take place in person in the Copenhagen area or online, in English or Danish.
